Came out about the same for my family of 8. I wonder myself how to find the balance between minimalism and being self-sufficient in times of crisis.

I don’t really expect to be trapped in my house any time soon. :)

This does touch on a subject I don’t often see discussed on minimalist blogs, though: emergency supplies. Some things are worth owning even if you hope/expect to NEVER use them: a fire extinguisher comes to mind.

On a voluntary simplicity page I can’t find now, I read an advocation of owning useful things, beautiful things and emergency supplies.

We often lose electricity in rain and snow storms, but it is usually renewed in less than a day. We do have a generator, but have rarely used it. We usually shop for groceries twice a month and stock up prior to a storm. We heat with wood and cook with gas. Batteries for flashlights are inexpensive.

What’s most disturbing is that they list pets as an additional food source! I would gladly die before eating my pets!
