today i ran into some interesting advice from christine over at organize magazine for my linen closet. she wrote: “a bed requires only two sets of sheets, period – one to wash, and one to wear. the rule of twos applies to towels as well: two bath towels, two hand towels and two washcloths per family member. (have some extras for guests, but not too many.)”
i can’t think of any good argument against the two-by-two rule. looks like i’ve got some more work to do.
you can read the whole article about organizing solutions for your linen closet right here.
If you hang your towels properly to dry, you don’t need a new towel every day (except for maybe in humid locales).

I dry my clothes, towels and bed linens on a clothes rack. It may take a couple of days for things to dry during humid weather.
I prefer to wash one load of towels separate from my clothes and linens. Otherwise, the towel fuzz gets all over the other fabrics.
So, I have a dozen towels, two weeks of clothing and two sets of linens.
I store a dozen kitchen towels as well, because I change them frequently.
My rule is 1 – tear them off the bed, wash them, and put them back on. Voila!
My rule is 3 – one to wear, one spare and one in the wash.
Damn – Are you reading my mind (from the past)? I was thinking this exact same thing this whole week (December 2010)!
I’m going to go on a rampage in my linen closet although I will be keeping more than 4 (2 for me, 2 for my wife) towels as we both are gym junkies ;)
@David Engel The thing about washing more frequently is that, even though you’re washing once a week instead of once every two weeks, you still are spending about the same amount of time, unless you’re visiting a laundry mat.
I have done this recently and my sister-in-law visited over the holidays and was in awe at how great the closet looked. She called her boyfriend in to check it out and said he is very minimalistic too. Thanks for the inspiration.
